Overview: Arts & Sciences Course Attributes for Undergraduates

Attributes are the codes associated with a course that indicate which distribution requirement(s) a course can fulfill. Course attribute(s) are included as part of the course information displayed in Course Listings.


A&S Degree Requirement Attributes

For A&S degree requirements in the IQ Curriculum there three types of requirements:

  • “Area” attributes
    • The Humanities (HUM)
    • Natural Sciences & Mathematics (NSM)
    • Social & Behavioral Sciences (SSC)
    • Language & Cultural Diversity (LCD)
      • Language Path
      • Culture Path
  • Integrations
    • Majors and Minors in Arts & Sciences
    • Ampersand Programs
    • Specially Designated Study Away Programs
    • Integrated Inquiries (IQs)
  • “Core” requirements
    • Writing 1
    • Applied Numeracy (AN)
    • Social Contrasts (SC)
    • Writing Intensive (WI)

Departmental (major) Attributes

Attributes have also been created to indicate how courses meet certain major requirements. As of July 2017, departments like Art History and Archaeology, American Culture Studies, English Literature, History and International and Area Studies are using departmental (major) attributes.
